Shakib Al Hasan named Bangladesh Test captain

Bangladesh ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has been named the new Test captain. The Bangladesh Cricket Board re-appointed Shakib following Mominul Haque's recent decision to step down from the post in order to concentrate on his batting. Liton Das has been named as his deputy.

Incidentally, Mominul was named captain in 2019 following an ICC ban on Shakib, imposed for failing to report corrupt charges. In his stint, Mominul led his side to three Test victories - including the historic one in New Zealand, two draws and 12 defeats in 17 fixtures.

Shakib has had two previous stints as Test captain, during which the team won three and lost 11 in 14 fixtures. He was first appointed Test skipper in 2009 when Mashrafe Mortaza was injured in West Indies. He was then handed the reigns in 2017, replacing Mushfiqur Rahim.
BCB president Nazmul Hasan confirmed the development, and revealed that the board had three names in their list and would've opted for the other two had Shakib said no to taking over. He was also not sure how long Shakib would remain in the role having now taken it up, but said that the all-rounder has offered his commitment to all forms of the game.

"We have a series against Zimbabwe after the West Indies. He may not be there. Other than this, he gave us a commitment he would play in all formats in future series, but it's difficult to say for how long Shakib will be leading the side," he said.

"We had three names in our hand. If Shakib was not interested we would chosen the duo from the three available option."
