Cricket set to be part of 2026 Asian Games in Japan

Cricket is officially set to be part of the 2026 Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan. The Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) confirmed its inclusion, continuing the sport's presence after its return at the 2023 Games in Hangzhou. This move aligns with cricket's growing international profile, especially with T20 cricket scheduled for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. While cricket's inclusion is confirmed, organizers face challenges regarding suitable venues. Japan has limited cricket infrastructure, and the only international-standard stadium in Tochigi Prefecture is over three hours from Nagoya. To address this, a baseball stadium in Nagoya is being converted to host the cricket events, offering a more feasible solution. Despite logistical hurdles, the Japan Cricket Association supports the initiative, viewing it as an opportunity to promote cricket in the country. The final sports program for the 2026 Games will be confirmed at the OCA General Assembly in April. The cricket matches are scheduled to be held in Aichi Prefecture, though the exact venue is yet to be finalized. Organizers are considering converting a baseball stadium in Nagoya to accommodate the games, addressing the limited cricket infrastructure in Japan. India will enter the 2026 Games as the defending champions in both men's and women's cricket, having secured gold medals in the 2023 edition. The continued inclusion of cricket aligns with its upcoming debut in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, highlighting the sport's growing prominence on the international stage.
