David Boon appointed Cricket Australia interim chair

Following Mike Baird's resignation at the board's Annual General Meeting, David Boon will take over as Cricket Australia's (CA) Interim Chair on October 28.

After six years on the CA Board and as Chair since February 2023, Baird informed the board that he would resign from his position following the AGM and would not seek re-appointment.

Boon stated, "It is an enormous honor to take the role of Interim CA Chair during this enormously exciting and also challenging time for cricket." "I look forward to leading the CA Board as we continue to make decisions that ensure the long-term health and prosperity of the game here"

Boon joined the CA Board in February 2025 after serving three years as its Chair and nine years as a director on the Cricket Tasmania Board. The former Australia international brings a wealth of administrative and cricket experience. He also served as an ICC Match Referee and was previously Cricket Tasmania’s General Manager of Cricket.

Boon was also a member of the Australian Selection Panel from 2000 to 2011.

According to Boon, "I would like to express my sincere thanks to Mike for his commitment and leadership as a passionate advocate for Australian Cricket from grassroots clubs to the Cricket Australia and ICC Board Rooms and everything in between." "Mike’s efforts to lead Australian Cricket, confront the many difficult decisions facing cricket and his influential role at the ICC should be appreciated by everyone throughout the game.”

CA stated that a procedure to select a permanent Chair will begin shortly after the AGM.

“I am delighted that David Boon has agreed to undertake the Interim Chair role while we complete the formal Chair process, and I will undertake a transition process with David over coming weeks," outgoing Chair Baird said.

“I have been extremely proud to have been a part of the oversight of cricket on the CNSW Board and the CA Board over the past six years, almost four of which I have served as Chair.

“The fans, volunteers, club cricketers, and umpires, who are the lifeblood of our game, deserve my gratitude. CA anticipates a record year for revenue, profit, attendance, and viewership this year, as well as a 40 percent rise in participation over the previous four years. With recent decisions on the Big Bash I also believe the long-term sustainability is assured.

“I also want to thank the Australian players, particularly the captains with whom I worked closely, Pat Cummins, Mitch Marsh, Alyssa Healy, and Sophie Molineux, who have demonstrated to future generations what it means to have character in addition to inspiring on the field with their results.

The CA Board, in my opinion, continues to lead Australian cricket well. They have a lot of experience and a lot of enthusiasm for the game, which gives me a lot of confidence for the future.

“Lastly, I want to express my gratitude to the CEO, Todd Greenberg. Todd is, in my opinion, the best sports administrator in the nation. He will undoubtedly prepare cricket for success for future generations.
