Erasmus’ 88 in vain as Zimbabwe boost final chances

Innocent Kaia's 72 off 42 overshadowed Gerhard Erasmus's unbeaten 88 off 48 as Zimbabwe defeated Namibia by 5 wickets to boost their chances of making the tri-series final. During his time there, Erasmus hit 8 fours and 3 sixes, putting Namibia on 156 for 6, after they were struggling at the halfway point of their innings. However, thanks to Kaia's excellent knock and the strong support he received, Zimbabwe maintained control of the chase and crossed the finish line with 11 deliveries remaining.

Zimbabwe made an explosive start to the chase, reaching 59 for 1 at the end of the Powerplay. Although Ben Curran departed soon after scoring a four, Kaia and Brian Bennett took charge to ensure a good start for their side. Kaia was particularly aggressive, repeatedly targeting the leg side, while Bennett joined in with a couple of fours. The pair added 61 for the second wicket, in just 34 balls, before Loftie-Eaton broke the partnership in the with the wicket of Bennett in the seventh over. Kaia, meanwhile, continued his assault as he brought up a 30-ball fifty by pulling Jack Brassell for a six over deep mid-wicket. Sikandar Raza also got going with a steer for a four, taking Zimbabwe to 91 for 2 after 10 overs.

Kaia struck two back-to-back fours off Ruben Trumpelmann as Zimbabwe crossed 100, and by the end of the 12th over the equation came down to 46 off 48. Kaia also hit a six off JJ Smit before getting out to Brassell in the 14th over, with a top-edged pull to mid on ending a fine knock. Raza scored a boundary off Trumpelmann before the Zimbabwe T20I captain was bowled out and Wesley Madhavere was bowled shortly after. Zimbabwe were 132 for 5 at that stage, needing 28 more off 30. The remainder of the chase was handled by Tadiwanashe Marumani and Ryan Burl, who combined for six runs in the 19th over to win the game.

Earlier, Namibia made a brisk start after being asked to bat, with Louren Steenkamp scoring a couple of boundaries in the first two overs. However, Zimbabwe quickly took quick wickets, with Brad Evans dismissing Steenkamp for 14 and Blessing Muzarabani dismissing Jan Frylinck for 8. Kundai Matigimu then struck to bag the wicket of Zane Green, leaving Namibia at 25 for 3 in the sixth over. The innings remained in rebuilding mode through the next few overs before Alexander Volschenk broke the shackles in the ninth over with a classy six over extra cover off Burl.

However, Namibia had a lot of work to do in the second half because they had only scored 50 for 3 in the first ten overs. But the innings changed dramatically as Erasmus and Volschenk put together a vital 83-run partnership. Erasmus, who was on 10 off 11, began to accelerate as he struck regular boundaries and also hit a six off Wellington Masakadza en route to a 32-ball fifty. Even as Volschenk fell for 29 and more wickets followed, Erasmus continued to dominate. He smashed three fours and two sixes across the final four overs, carrying Namibia past 150, with 106 runs coming in the last 10 overs.
