Glenn Maxwell Announces Retirement from International and First-Class Cricket

International and Domestic Red-Ball Farewell: 38-year-old Australian allrounder Glenn Maxwell has officially retired from international cricket. In addition to ending his international career, he is also calling time on first-class and List A cricket.

T20 Franchise Continuity: Maxwell will continue playing franchise cricket and has extended his contract with the Melbourne Stars through the 2027–28 BBL season.

"I suppose, a small hope or discussion that I might have been able to potentially get a send-off game at the MCG. But I can completely understand the direction they're going with this squad. There's going to be a lot of change, I suppose, over the next 12 to 24 months with the Olympics coming up [in 2028], and they've got to make sure that they get their eyeballs on a few young guys coming through and making sure that they're getting exposed to international pressure that you probably can't always get from a BBL fixture."

Previous Format Exits: Maxwell had already retired from ODIs in June 2025 but kept himself available for T20Is, playing in the 2026 T20 World Cup where Australia exited in the group stage. His final international appearance was against Oman in February 2026.

Moving Toward the Future: He noted that discussions with team management were open-ended, understanding that selectors needed to look toward the future and give young players international exposure with the 2028 Olympics approaching.
