Hamish Rutherford announces retirement from all forms of cricket

New Zealand and Otago opening batter Hamish Rutherford will play the last match of his professional career next week, in the Super Smash clash against Northern Districts in Dunedin. Rutherford will end a career that started in 2008 and in which he has scored 16,468 so far across formats.

Rutherford had 16 Tests as impact of his 130 top of the line games and scored a 171 on debut against Britain in 2013. He made 7863 top notch runs alongside 17 centuries while averaging 35.26. Rutherford will resign having played the most T20s for Otago; he broke Neil Brush's record recently. By and large, he will resign having played the third most counterparts for Otago across designs, behind Brush (348) and Derek de Boorder (292).

"Hamish will without a doubt be viewed as one of Otago's greats," Otago Cricket CEO Mike Coggan said. "I have seen him play innings that not many different cricketers are prepared to do. He has been a performer at the highest point of the innings, and he has my highest regard as a player and individual. His commitment to Otago Cricket has been gigantic.

"I have not seen one more opener who has joined tolerance and hostility as Hamish has. His large hundred years on debut at home was surprising against a quality Britain side and the 155 (off 100 balls) he scored in a Passage Prize match in Dunedin against Cd back in 2020 was something to observe. Hamish has forever been an understudy of the game and one of homegrown cricket's best scholars. He has been a delight to watch and be aware and I wish him well in retirement."

Otago Cricket will respect Rutherford on January 23 in his last game.
