Hobart Hurricanes, reigning champions of the (BBL), have been officially invited to participate in the Global Super League (GSL) hosted in Guyana
The Hobart Hurricanes, fresh off their maiden BBL title in January, are now poised to take part in the Global Super League (GSL) in Guyana this July, marking a historic overseas expansion for the franchise.
🏏 What's Happening:
Cricket Tasmania will send a team to the GSL under the Hurricanes name, aiming to field a competitive squad despite potential scheduling conflicts.
This move follows the precedent set by Cricket Victoria, which sent a team (under state colours) to last year's edition of the GSL in December, finishing runners-up.
That Victorian squad included international names like Corey Anderson and Scott Edwards, along with several development players due to overlap with the Aussie domestic season.
🌍 Key Details:
GSL 2025 has been shifted to July, aligning it with Australia's Test tour of the West Indies and just ahead of the T20I series vs WI.
This timing could allow fringe players, young prospects, and possibly out-of-contract BBL stars to feature without clashing with major international or domestic commitments.
The Hurricanes' participation reflects the GSL's ambition to evolve into a cross-continental, franchise-driven T20 league, potentially rivalling newer circuits like ILT20 or SA20.
🤔 What to Watch:
Squad composition: With Australia's main squad occupied, who fills the Hurricanes' XI? Could we see a mix of emerging Aussies, international signings, and local Caribbean talent?
Player scouting: The GSL might double as a talent-spotting ground for both Hurricanes and other BBL franchises.
CA’s stance: While Cricket Tasmania is on board, Cricket Australia’s broader policy on overseas leagues could shape future involvement.
