Nortje Eager for Test Comeback After Surprise Inclusion in South Africa Squad

Context: Recalled to South Africa's 18-man Test squad for the series against Australia starting October 2026.

Surprise Recall: Anrich Nortje expressed excitement about earning a call-up to the Proteas' Test squad for the upcoming home series against Australia, having last played a Test match in March 2023. Recovery & Preparation: Following a three-year red-ball absence plagued by recurring stress fractures and injuries, Nortje has meticulously managed his workload and fitness preparation to gear up for a potential return.

Assessment Phase: Head Coach Shukri Conrad emphasized that Nortje's inclusion in the expanded 18-player preliminary squad is an opportunity to evaluate his bowling intensity and readiness during intra-squad warm-up games before committing to his inclusion in the final playing XI.

Passion for Red-Ball Cricket: Nortje reaffirmed his deep commitment to the longest format, dismissing speculation that he was shifting focus entirely to short-format franchise leagues and expressing how meaningful wearing the South African Test cap remains to him.

Nortje has only played against Australia in one series, on a forgettable tour in 2022-23. South Africa lost 2-0, having been saved by rain in the third match. Nortje played in all three games and took seven wickets, while South Africa's most successful bowler was Kagiso Rabada, who bagged 11. Nortje was nowhere near as impressive as the player who led the bowling charts against Sri Lanka at home two years before, and felt he did not give as good an account of himself as he could have.

South Africa will play a two-day intra-squad match starting on Sunday before whittling their 18-player squad down to 15. Nortje has a healthy chance of making the XI as the hosts have been ravaged by injuries to their fast bowlers ahead of the series. They will take a call on Kagiso Rabada, who has a hamstring concern, on Monday, while Lungi Ngidi, Kwena Maphaka and Ottneil Baartman have been ruled out of the series in advance due to injuries.
