Two months shy of his 38th birthday, Faf du Plessis still finds meaning in cricket. But more than runs, victories, sizable paychecks and moments in the spotlight, what's really driving the former South African captain is a sense of purpose.
"I feel that leadership has been a big part of my journey because it does give you that sense that it is who you are as a person," he reflects. "I do really find that when you can pull people along with you on your journey and take them somewhere, that has been my purpose but also, obviously, a legacy is something that I always wanted to leave."
This is why he jumped at the opportunity to skipper Royal Challengers Bangalore after Virat Kohli had stepped down.
