Tom Westley steps down as Essex captain after tough season

Tom Westley has stepped down as Essex captain at the end of a difficult season for the club, one which could yet result in relegation from the first division of the County Championship.

Westley, 37, is the club's longest-serving player, having joined the Essex academy in 2003. He was appointed captain in January 2020, with Ryan ten Doeschate stepping down after the club's County Championship and T20 Blast double-winning season in 2019.

He enjoyed initial success, guiding the team to the Bob Willis Trophy in 2020 - the red-ball tournament that replaced the County Championship during the Covid pandemic - and in 2025 he became the club's all-time leading run-scorer in One Day Cup history.

However, this season's campaign has been a more difficult one. From June to September, Essex dropped five of their six Championship matches, and they were on the verge of losing their season-ending match against Glamorgan before rain prevented play on the final day.

They finished the campaign in seventh place in Division One, 25 points clear of the second relegation spot, but must await the result of Leicestershire's appeal against the 27-point penalty that they received for a substandard pitch in their victory over Glamorgan last month.

"Captaining Essex has been, and always will be, my greatest honour," Westley said. "It has been a privilege to serve this wonderful club, and it saddens me that I haven't been able to leave it in a better place. Serving it has been a privilege."

"Personally, I believe that scoring runs and contributing to Essex victories are my greatest contributions, which I haven't been able to accomplish this year. For that reason, I feel now is the right time for a change and for the club to explore a new direction.

"It is an all-encompassing role which has been demanding at times, none more so than this current season, for which I will be accountable. My disappointment with the second half of the year's results is unmatched.

"That said, I cannot express my gratitude and thanks to all the people who have supported me throughout this passage of my career. I can't put into words how much I owe this club's members and supporters, past and present players, and coaching staff. I am truly grateful to each of you.

"First and foremost, I want to express my gratitude to my family, who must bear with me the highs and lows. "I am grateful."

Essex's director of cricket, Chris Silverwood, stated, "We would like to thank Tom for his time as Club Captain." He has led Essex Cricket for six years with a great deal of pride, enthusiasm, and dedication. We are grateful for everything he has contributed to the role, both on and off the field.

"During Tom's tenure as captain, he was an important leader for the Club, and we appreciate his dedication and contributions in that capacity.

"In due course, a new captain will be announced."
