‘A Draw Like a Win’: Rahmat Shah Praises Afghanistan’s Fight

The new Afghanistan Test captain Rahmat Shah and his team battled for five days in the sweltering heat of Abu Dhabi against a well-coached Bangladesh team to earn a draw, demonstrating their progress in the longer format.

Afghanistan batted for 142 overs in their second innings, including 92 on the fifth and final day, to force a remarkable draw. The historic rearguard effort was built around Sediqullah Atal's maiden Test century.

On the final day, Bangladesh appeared to be the overwhelming favorite to win. They needed seven wickets to win. However, Atal had a different plan. Following in the footsteps of his idol, Alastair Cook, the left-handed opener showed remarkable composure and determination to defy the odds. Atal scored 111 runs in 332 balls, hitting nine fours and three sixes, for his first Test century and serving as the driving force behind Afghanistan's struggle for survival.

Rahmat stated, "This draw is actually equivalent to a win." "Excellent effort from our boys. If you look at it, we had made plans in advance. We carried out that strategy regardless of whether it was in the batting or bowling departments. We scored runs when runs were required, and we spent time when we needed to. Because of this, our outcome was a draw."

Atal was praised by Rahmat for successfully transitioning from Twenty20 cricket to the longest format.

He stated, "Sediqullah came fresh from T20s, and the way he maintained his temperament here, fulfilling the team's requirements and executing it, that is why this result was achieved." Sediqullah had just finished playing in the T20s.

Afghanistan batting coach Toby Radford told that he was pleased with the contributions from across the batting order, including the lower order's efforts on the final day.

"As a team, I was delighted that two players scored centuries in the match and others contributed with half-centuries and vital partnerships. He stated, "The tail batted well and sensibly today." "Today, the strategy was to bat for a long time and be patient. Not to be bothered if they bowled dot balls or maidens. to play for brief, manageable chunks of time that would get us to our goal of batting all day.

"Being able to bat for more than seven hours and over 140 overs (800 deliveries) in our second innings was a great accomplishment. The players' success in securing a draw from the match was largely due to their patience and disciplined, straight-forward play. An outstanding effort on the part of everyone."
